Estimation of Sex by Weighing the Mass of Edentulous Dry Skulls of Brazilians

The objective of this research is to verify if there is dimorphism when analyzing the mass weight of dry skulls of edentulous maxillae. As well as the construction of a logistic regression model to estimate sex. The approval of CEP-CAAE 38522714.6.0000.5418 was obtained. Calibration was performed and the mass of 171 dry and edentulous skulls, belonging to the Osteological and Tomographic Biobank, was subsequently weighed, seeking to verify the existence of dimorphism, as well as the possibility of creating a logistic regression model that allows the estimation of sex. All of them with known age, sex, ancestry and cause of death. Weighing was performed with a semi-analytical digital scale (WELMYTM Model W3) with a capacity of 10000 g/1.0 g. Initially, the calibration was performed with the intraclass test (ICC), which obtained a strong correlation for the weighings performed. In the data analysis, the IBM@SPSS@25STATISTICS™ software was used, through the analysis of Poisson Analysis and logistic regression by the Stepwise-Forward (Wald) method, and it was found that the mass of dry edentulous skulls are not significantly dimorphic, but there was a positive relationship in skulls greater than 901 grams. The logistic regression model obtained obtained 59.3% sensitivity, 66.7% specificity and 63.2% accuracy, proving to be effective in predicting sex than mere chance. It was possible to obtain a logistic regression model to estimate age based on the mass of edentulous skulls of Brazilians, but its use alone in Brazilians is contraindicated, but in association with other methods.
